Scooters and mopeds are completely different modes of transportation, but they do have a few things in common. Both are fantastic for use in high traffic areas and for going short distances at times when a vehicle or public transportation is not available. Scooters are very easy to use, and for that reason, children and adults alike enjoy them for not only getting around, but for sheer enjoyment as well. In most cities, you must be at least 16 years of age to legally operate a moped.
Scooters are a very popular mode of self-propelled transportation and come in a variety of models that will accommodate different riding styles. The folding scooter is the most widely used type of scooter since it is lightweight, compact and portable. This model features either two wheels or three wheels and is constructed from durable steel or aluminum. Considered the standard scooter, it can be folded to the size of a small suitcase and easily transported onto a bus, in a car or airplane.
Teenagers often choose either the skateboard scooter or the freestyle scooter. Both types can be used for trick riding. The skateboard scooter is somewhat of a combination between a four-wheeled skateboard and a scooter. This model is outfitted with a fixed handlebar and smaller wheels, making it a bit slower than other scooters. The freestyle scooter features a cool kick tail that the skateboard scooter doesn’t have. The kick tail is a part of the deck that extends over the back wheel, pointing toward the sky.
Adults and older children seem to prefer the executive scooter. This type features wider wheels that provide a smooth ride, even when going over cracks and bumps. The executive scooter goes pretty fast, so it’s outfitted with a set of handbrakes. This model can be folded when it’s not in use, even though it is a larger scooter than the standard folding scooter.
Another version of the scooter is the three-wheel folding scooter. The wheels on this scooter are arranged in an in-line skating style, with one wheel in front of the scooter and two wheels in the back of the scooter. The three-wheel folding scooter combines features of the folding scooter and the skateboard scooter.
The two types of scooters that aren’t self-propelled and used for short road trips are the gas powered or electric powered motorized scooters.
Electric powered scooters are perfect for adults who have limited mobility. This type of scooter enables people to get around town, around their home, or the grocery store without additional assistance. Some electric scooters are designed specifically for indoor use or for outdoor use. A three-wheeled scooter offers great maneuvering ability and therefore is ideal for indoor use. A four-wheeled electric scooter is more durable and best for outdoor use. The height and weight of the person operating the scooter will make a difference when it comes to choosing which model best fits your needs.
Some cities and towns have rules governing the use of gas scooters, so check them out before using gas-powered scooters on or off road.
Mopeds are defined legally as “any two-wheeled vehicle of any design that meets local regulations that commonly relate to speed restriction”. Mopeds don’t normally reach speeds higher than 35 mph. However, the lines between mopeds and scooters blur a bit when it comes to design and speed. Basically, if a moped exceeds a specific speed (governed by local restrictions) and has a scooter design, it is considered a fast scooter.
Mopeds are different from scooters in that an electric motor or a gas motor powers them. Electric mopeds are environmentally friendly and are ideal for a short commute, running errands or getting to school. Larger batteries make this a viable option for those traveling relatively short distances.
Gas powered mopeds can reach up to 65 mph and great for longer road trips. Some mopeds are approved for passengers, whereas some are not. Some mopeds will travel up to 100+ miles on one gallon of gas, so they are less expensive to drive than a vehicle. A four-stroke engine on a moped will deliver more power, better fuel economy and fewer emission levels than a two-stroke engine.
Cities and towns do have rules and safety regulations concerning the use of mopeds. You’ll be required to wear a helmet and you’ll need to obtain a specific license and insurance covering mopeds in particular.
Scooters and mopeds alike come in several different colors and styles, so you’re likely to find exactly what you need for mobility, exercise, or traveling to work or school.
